Just prior to ANZAC day, we were called to perhaps the biggest event in the area for many years, as shown in the aerial photo. A fire broke out to the north of the western end of Cherry Gardens Road. During de-briefs after this event we discussed any learnings. Please be aware of access to properties for the appliances – overhanging tree branches, gates not wide enough etc.

The Great War of 1914 – 1918 saw thirty-nine men enlist from the Cherry Gardens district, with thirteen of them paying the supreme sacrifice. Around December 2018, members of the current Cherry Gardens community discussed the idea of decorating the Cross of Remembrance with handmade poppies, to honour the past and to become part of the future.

Public Meeting with Telstra

Living in Cherry Gardens on the fringe of metropolitan Adelaide, so many of us struggle with getting a decent and reliable mobile phone signal, NBN coverage and ADSL Internet service. After many false starts we were pleased that Steve Murray (our local state MP) was able to arrange a representative from Telstra to meet with us and any interested locals to discuss our many concerns and complaints

Remembrance Day

In Cherry Gardens we don’t think there has been a Remembrance Day service before but as it is the 100 year anniversary we thought it would be fitting to hold a service this year. It will be a brief service and we invite you the community to attend if you wish. If you are unable to make it then please try to remember to stop what you are doing at 11am and pause to reflect on the sacrifices of those who served during that terrible war.

Thank you to all those who attended the Community Dinner held at the Hall on 30th June. We had a capacity crowd, (packed to the rafters!) and judging from the feedback, everyone had a great time. Get out your diaries, because we have another get together opportunity. We will again be having the Community Campfire, this year on Saturday 25th August from 5pm to 8pm.

The Cherry Chatter has a new website! Fear not, the website is not meant to replace our printed newsletter. We know that most of you enjoy reading the Cherry Chatter in its original form and we are proud of the fact that, for more than 25 years, our publication has been kept alive, thanks to the Cherry Gardens community spirit. But then we thought, why not share it with the wider community and make it more accessible?

The Cherry Gardens Memorial Hall Committee has, as one of its main objectives, the running of a number of functions each year to provide an opportunity for the local community to come together. Last year the dinner was a sell-out, and we had many encouraging comments from those who attended. In this issue of the Cherry Chatter you will find a flyer providing more information on the dinner, and you are encouraged to book early as we expect to have another full house.

Anzac Day always stirs many emotions for me, as I suspect it does for many others also. Countless times, I have stood amongst stands of towering, whispering, soughing pines and felt the shiver of loss and grief for all those ordinary, ruddy faced boys and men, those rose-cheeked hopeful girls and women, who went off to find adventure in the ‘Great War’, only to be, often-times forlornly lost, or deeply scarred by that turbulent and catastrophic period.
