Edition 322 | April 2021
The Cherry Chatter committee made a decision at our last meeting to not proceed with the ANZAC Day breakfast at the Memorial Hall due to the COVID restrictions.
You can read the 2021 AGM report for the Cherry Gardens Community Association and Cherry Chatter. This will be our 29th year which is something we should be proud of. Again, I would really hope we can encourage a few younger and energetic locals to get involved.
The Cherry Gardens Memorial Hall is available for hire at very reasonable rates + Laughing Llama Dance and Drama group is holding classes at the hall.
An overview of the season for CFS Air Support. By far the biggest incident in which we have been involved so far this season – and the closest to home – was the Cherry Gardens fire. We were called out at about 4pm on 24th January. Four hours later, when the bombers stopped flying for the night, we had completed 72 loads.
In light of the recent bushfires in and around Cherry Gardens, we all seem even more aware of the importance of bushfire preparedness and I wanted to share with the community our experience with the Burning on Private Lands Program. The good news is help is available!
Next meeting will be Monday 12th April when Rosalie Lawrence will speak on native orchids of the local area + Read George’s gardening suggestions for April.
It seems like such a long time between articles and I remember wishing you all a safe and uneventful summer break. Unfortunately that was not to be and many of us found ourselves in the midst of a frightening summer fire. As bad as these events are, hopefully there are some positives to be taken from them.
If your interest or curiosity is anything like mine, and you would like to learn more about this wonderful organization, then please let me know by emailing the Cherry Chatter. If there is any interest in our community, then I will arrange for an information evening which could be held at the Cherry Gardens Memorial Hall.
Autumn is upon us and, across the valley from the Cherry Church, the tree nursery’s tints are changing into different, more colourful hues. And as Autumn brings these alterations to the natural world, we also enter the Christian season of Lent, the precursor to Easter.
On 24 January a deliberately lit fire on a high fire danger day burnt its way through 500 hectares of Scott Creek Conservation Park. So goes the impassive headline. A devastating heart-wrench for the Friends group was learning that the home of inaugural members Donna and Don Reid was also destroyed along with Donna’s amazing artworks and years and years of Don’s personal bird observation records.
