Football Club
The 2018 season is now well and truly underway with our men’s teams just having finished Round 7 and our women, Round 5. The season started with quite warm weather and a tough playing surface, and we found ourselves running out of drinks for supporters. With the rain that we have had in recent weeks the playing surface is much better for the players, and supporters have had to rug up and enjoy the BBQ and canteen food as well as the bar.
The footy has been really good, and at this time our A’s are 4th on the ladder, having a lower percentage than the 2 teams immediately above us, and the B’s are currently second on the ladder, with the same number of wins as the top team, but a lower percentage.
With our junior teams, this year we have an U10 “Moddies” team, U12’s, U14’s and U18’s. Unfortunately this year we could not field an U16’s team as there just were not enough boys around to get a team playing. We are also running the Auskick program for the Coromandel and Hawthorndene Primary Schools.
Unfortunately the U12’s have not won a game yet so are bottom of the ladder but, as they are a young team and just finding their feet, we are very happy with how they are going. The U14’s have had a few really good wins but have also had a couple of bad losses so they are sitting in 4th position on the ladder. The U18’s lost their first 3 games, but have turned their season around and have won the last 3 (they have had a bye) and are 4th on their ladder.
We have 2 female teams this year and the U16 girls are playing in the Hills League which only has 4 teams as it is a start-up comp. Our girls are yet to get a win on the board, but are really enjoying their footy and are as “keen as mustard”. The Senior Women as playing in the SAWFL again this year, but most of the teams are also Hills Teams and our girls are having a great season so far and are unbeaten which is a good confidence booster for them, after a few significant losses last year.
Home games every second week
There are home games every second week at the Recreation Ground and we would love to see locals come along and support the club, enjoy some good footy, and soak up the family friendly atmosphere that we encourage with all our supporters and players.
On a home game we have the canteen open, a BBQ cooking good food, and the bar serving any drinks you may like. It is a great day so come along and check it out. The seniors play in the afternoons with the B’s starting at 12.50pm and the A’s at 2.30pm. After all home games, we put on meals in the clubrooms and the player presentations start at 6pm. All in all an enjoyable way to spend the day.
The oval is in use most days or nights now with training on every night, the big night being Thursday when we also serve meals for the players, families and supporters, and locals are always welcome. There is soup, fish and chips, and schnitzels, chicken nuggets for the kids, and lasagne or some other specials. On Friday nights the little kids play (the Moddies and U12’s), the boys and men play on Saturdays and the girls and women on Sundays.
