Football Club

Hello Cherry Chatter readers. Well the 2018 season has been a great success for the Ironbank Cherry Gardens Football Club. This is your local club and whether you have an interest in football or not the fact is that the Recreation Ground and the sporting teams there are one of the few places we have where the community can get together, meet and enjoy each other’s company.

Playing sport (and for us playing football) is a great way to spend time together as a community and of course everything feels better when you are winning. This year our club has come away with 2 Premierships which is an outstanding effort for the players, members and supporters.

A few weeks ago our senior women’s team in only their second year of playing football won their division premiership and one of our women, Olivia Walker-Obushak won the division best and fairest. A fantastic effort for everyone who has been involved in the formation of this team and the overall introduction of female football to the local club.

In the final series for the boys and men we had 4 teams playing finals footy. The U14’s won their first final’s game but came up against a very strong Kangarilla side the following week and got eliminated. The U18’s beat both Kangarilla and Gumeracha in their 2 finals games but then came up against Kersbrook (who eventually ended up winning the premiership) in the third week of finals and got beaten by a healthy margin in the final quarter. They played very well and the future looks bright for the club with a number of these young men moving on to senior football next year.

The B’s or reserves finished on top and only had to play Birdwood in the second week of the finals and went straight through to the Grand Final. They had played an amazing year of football and it all looked great for the Grand Final but football can be a tough game and the footy gods were not on our side at Callington against Kersbrook. The game was played in the worst weather conditions we had played in all year with gale force winds, rain and hail with our boys copping the worst of it kicking into the wind when it was at its worse. The boys had a tough first half but in the third quarter they clawed their way back to be within less than a goal and with momentum on their side it looked good for us. A few turn overs’ and Kersbrook making the most of their opportunities and we lost by a couple of goals in the end much to the disappointment of all lads who had worked so hard to get that flag this year.

The A’s then had to overcome that disappointment and focus on their game and to their credit they came out of the blocks and took Kersbrook on in a very exciting game where we led from the first bounce and with the weather keeping quite clear, compared to what the B’s had to put up, with we were able to play the game on our terms and even though Kersbrook got to within 8 points of us in the final term the boys steadied and booted a couple more goals and won by 27 points.

So with 3 teams playing grand finals we came away with 2 Premierships which is an outstanding effort and something everyone at the club is very proud of.

So the footy season is now over. The junior presentations were held on Friday night 22nd September and the seniors will be on October 5th. Great nights for the club where we can all celebrate the achievements and recognise all the players and volunteers. The footy club AGM will be held on November 7th at the club if anyone is interested to come along but that will be the last function for the year until preseason training starts at the end of January.

A big thank you to all our club members, volunteers and supporters. To our sponsors we say thank you for your support and you are always welcome at the club and the games and we encourage everyone to support these businesses who support us.

As spring and summer rolls on, the cricket, tennis and summer netball competitions will start and we hope everyone joins in and continues to play sport, enjoy each other’s company and meals on a Thursday night.
