Cherry Church

‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.’

John 3: 16–17

In the grounds of the Cherry Church are some of the region’s oldest headstones. They mark the graves of a few of the district’s first European settlers. Some of those headstones are crafted from Willunga slate, and bear the amazing, etched calligraphy of the Sara family.

The heritage of the church building and headstones is part of a rich fabric that makes Cherry Gardens such a special place.

Most precious in that heritage, though, is the fact that the church has been used for Christian worship since its opening, in March 1849, 172 years ago. Even before this event, local families met in each other’s homes for worship, prayer and Bible study.

Today it is just as pertinent as it was in 1849 to have the Church as a place of Christian worship and prayer. Indeed, it is a reminder that Christian, in fact all, history centres on the Cross and resurrection of Jesus. The congregation of the Cherry Church continues to live out the faith that has been a central part of the community for over 180 years.

As a place of Christian worship, the Cherry Church and its lively congregation welcomes everyone to drop in. Sunday morning worship is held each week at 9.30 am, followed by a cup of tea. Please come and join us, we’d love to see you.
