Airstrip Editorial Corner
With summer approaching we are looking to document some history of the Air Support activities that originated in Cherry Gardens. Cherry Gardens was at the forefront in development of the Air Support equipment and activities as the advent of aircraft to support the ground crews started in South Australia.
One of the Cherry Gardens CFS volunteers, Brian Geue, was instrumental in the development of some of the early equipment used to mix the fire retardant and fill the aircraft. It was a messy job as in the early days the fire retardant was red. The Cherry Gardens CFS had a number of volunteers that supported the Air Operations, and an Air Operations vehicle and trailer was housed in the old CFS fire shed opposite the current CFS building.
If there are any locals who have any recollections, they would like to share then please contact Cherry Chatter.
Here are a few photos from the early days.
