Football News
Well we are halfway through the footy season already which is hard to believe. The senior teams have been going well but the juniors have been a mixed bag. The A’s have lost just the one game, Kersbrook who we won the flag off last year, on the wettest and most miserable Saturday so far this season. The B’s have lost 3 games, also Kersbrook who beat us in the GF last year, and also Birdwood and Kangarilla.
The women had a bit of a slow start to the season with a number of new players and now playing in the Hills League and have lost just the 2 games so far.
The U14’s are yet to post a win although they have had one drawn game. A number of the players are at the low end of the age range and are coming up against some experienced and stronger teams. They are all still enjoying themselves.
The U16’s are going well and have lost a couple of games but are really coming together as a team. There are a number of new players to the club and it took a few games for them to start to work together. The team also has quite a few players at the bottom of the age group and could do with a bit more meat on their bones (as the coach has suggested).
The U18 team has combined with boys from the Bridgewater club and go under the handle of the IronRaiders. They started the season quite strongly but have struggled a bit as the season has progressed with a few injuries and some boys from Bridgewater not able to play for one reason or another.
Outside of playing footy the club has been busy throughout the week with training and a few functions. Early in the season was our members and sponsors day and since then we have had our Ladies Day and pink socks day where we donate the proceeds to the fight against cancer. Recently we had the past players day which was very well attended and it was great to see so many of the past players enjoy a good win for both teams against Bridgewater and then hang around for a few drinks and a hearty meal. The Ironbank CFS cooked 2 of Brett Scarborough’s lambs on the spits throughout the day and this was served up with roast potatoes and vege’s or salad.
This game also saw Will Muirden, our skipper, play his 250th senior game for the club. What a great milestone and congratulations to Will!
Coming up on June 14th is the football clubs Golf Day where we are given the run of the Blackwood Golf Club and late in June is our first “Clubs Day” where all the sporting clubs at the Recreation Day work together and raise funds for the Rec Ground. We are hoping that this will be a success and become an annual event.
As with everything at the Football Club, Netball Club and Recreation Ground, everyone is welcome and we hope that all the residents of Cherry Gardens, Ironbank and Coromandel East remember that you the community own it and it is yours to enjoy and be a part of. Whether you just want to walk the dog (please pick up the dog poo), kick a footy, shoot a few baskets or have a hit of tennis (go Ash Barty!) you are always welcomed and we want you to feel a part of what we are.
There are meals served every Thursday evening and it is a great place to make friends, catch up with what’s going on and just feel a part of the community.
Hope to see you at the club and maybe check out the next home game!
