Football Club
Well our first club corner for the season is better late than never. With the minor rounds now finished we are into the finals and hopefully our seniors teams will all be strong contenders. The A’s and B’s both finished in second spot of the table but lost their first Qualifying finals and will be fighting to stay in the finals on the last weekend in August.
For our juniors we were very happy to have been able to field teams in all the colts unlike many of the other Div 2 clubs. The U14’s are quite a young team and have only had the one win for the season and a draw. The U16’s have had a mixed season and are sitting third on the ladder. The U18’s (The Iron Raiders – being a combined Ironbank and Bridgewater team) are sitting 4th on the ladder. The club is very proud of all our juniors and the effort they put in to training and on the field. Also a big thanks to the senior players who have volunteered their time on Saturday and Sunday mornings to run the Auskick programs at the local primary schools. Having spoken to many of the parents I can assure you that they have been full of praise for the efforts you have put in and the kids have loved it.
Outside of playing footy the club continues to be busy throughout the week with training and have had some good functions including the annual Thunderball and last month we joined with the Blackwood Golf Club to have our inaugural Club Golf Day. Unfortunately, the weather was not the best, but everyone had a fun day and the hospitality of the golf club was great. We hope to continue this close association.
annual Quiz night
Early in August we held our annual Quiz night which was a huge success. We had close to 200 people attend and our Quiz master, Michael Green, did a fantastic job with the questions not being crazy difficult but still challenging enough to make it a good competition. A table of Cherry Gardens locals took out the grand prize so congratulations to them. There was also a silent auction run on the night with some really great items up for grabs. Everything got sold and the club was able to raise around $6,000 on the night which we will use for improvements around the club.
Grant
We were also very fortunate to have received some grant funding from the Office of Recreation and Sport and Racing and the local council which will enable us to build a new goal net at the northern end of the oval.
Open forum
A couple of weeks ago, immediately following our women’s team one-point win over Nairne, we held a special meeting which everyone involved with the club was invited to, and where we started the conversation about the next few years of our club. We think it is important that everyone whether they are a player, supporter or volunteer has a chance to tell us what they would like to see and for the committee to listen. It was pleasing to see a good number of people at the meeting and following some information sharing from the committee it was an open forum where everyone had the opportunity to raise issues and suggestions.
Presentation Nights
Junior Presentation night this year is at the Blackwood Golf Club on September 27th at 7pm. The Senior Presentation night will also be at the Blackwood Golf Club and on October 11th at 7pm.
Happy Birthday Pud
The football club would like to wish Pud a very happy 60th recently and thanks for everything you have done and continue to do around the club.
