Football Club

Well, the Ironbank Cherry Gardens Football Club is now well into the back half of the season and it is really great to see that nearly all teams are having good success, and the club has quite a buzz around with players and supporters. The only team that has already finished is our U16 girls’ team who unfortunately finished the season with just the one win, but a whole lot of enthusiasm. We are so proud of these girls in 2018, and as a club, we have a lot of work to do for 2019 as most of the girls will be too old to play next year. If there are any budding players out there, please get in contact with the club.

The senior women only have one more game in the minor round and will finish on top, and this means they go straight into the Grand Final which will be played on Sunday August 19th at the ALDI Arena, which is the old Thebarton Oval. We don’t yet know what time the girls will be playing, but watch our Facebook page for the latest information. They are doing a training session there to get used to the oval next week.

Our A Grade men are second on the ladder, a couple of games clear of third place Nairne, and one win behind Kersbrook. They have 4 games left in the minor round and certainly look like they will be playing finals. A big loss for the A’s is our ruck who did some serious damage to his knee, and is out for at least a year with a complete knee reconstruction required.

Courier Cup Winners

Courier Cup Winners

The reserves or B’s, are on top of the ladder and also look almost certain to be playing finals this year. Last year they were unable to get past the first round elimination finals, so we are hoping they can get much further into finals this year. A couple of weeks ago the B’s played at home against Birdwood for the Courier Cup which is played between the 2 top teams mid-season. They had a good win which is the first silver wear the club has had for a good few years. Well done to the B’s.

The U14’s are still just hanging on to 4th place but a couple of games behind 2nd and 3rd and hopefully will be playing finals although it is going to be a tough ask against the much stronger Macclesfield and Nairne Bremer teams.

The U18’s have had quite a few injury issues this year, but are still well placed in 4th albeit a few games behind the 3rd place Gumeracha, and look like playing in the finals.

The U12’s is a new comp this year and we have struggled for numbers every week, but the boys and girls have been enjoying themselves and learning all about football. They have not won a game yet, the closest has been a draw against Mt Lofty.

Home games and Functions

A couple of weeks ago the Ironbank CFS along with Brett Scarborough (Freeflow Plumbing) and Rob Hayden, cooked up 2 lambs on a spit during the home games against Birdwood, and we all had a great feed that night. The players have had a couple of functions including a “Frat Party” in the tradition of the USA college shows, and joined up with the Netball Club for their “Blokes” day recently.

Coming up on August 4th at the club, is the annual Thunderball, which this year has a Miami theme.

Our home games are on every second week at the Recreation Ground and we would love to see locals come along and support the club, enjoy some good footy, and soak up the family friendly atmosphere that we encourage with all our supporters and players.

The seniors play in the afternoons with the B’s starting at 12.50pm and the A’s at 2.30pm. After all home games, we put on meals in the clubrooms, and the player presentations start at 6pm. All in all an enjoyable way to spend the day. There are only a couple of home games left this season, July 28th and August 11th so if you can make it to the club, then come and enjoy some good grass roots local footy.

On Thursday nights we serve meals for the players, families and supporters, and locals are always welcome. There is soup, fish and chips, schnitzels, chicken nuggets for the kids, and lasagne or some other specials.
